I bought these speakers about half a year ago. The sound quality is pretty decent when they actually work.

However, when I got this set, I had XP installed. Since these are USB speakers, they require software to run them. The interface was complete junk, filling the top and bottom 1/4 of your screen with a very primitive UI every time you changed the volume. On top of that, you need to use a stupid remote to change the sound since it has no physical knobs or buttons.

Now to the fun part. When I upgraded to Windows 7, this piece of junk refused to change volume at all, even if I changed the windows volume. It should be noted that I upgrade to Win7 several months after release, so it's not like they didn't have time to work out glitches. So, I check the boards, and it turns out a lot of people are having the same problem. Their representative responds that they tried to reproduce the problem on one laptop and failed, so it must be our environment. Several of us, me included, stated repeatedly that we had completely fresh installations of Win7 with nothing installed, and still the volume was stuck. After a week or two, the representative said they tried it again, on the same laptop, and couldn't reproduce the problem, and that they wouldn't commit any resources to fixing the problem. It was discovered that if you physically unplug the USB cord from your computer, you can change the volume, and then plug it back in. Yeah, that was real fun. Especially since sometimes sound wouldn't come back at all and would require a reboot.

A few months later, Win7 comes out with an update that fixes the problem, and I can change the volume without unplugging the thing. Horray!

Fast forward another couple months to today. There was a small power outage, and boom, my speakers are completely fried. No lights when I plug them into any outlet. Nothing else in the house burned out, just these PoS speakers. Not surprising in the least considering how cruddy these speakers were from the start.

Do NOT buy these glitchy, horribly made, poorly supported pieces of S. I personally won't be buying ANY Logitech electronics in the foreseeable future.

When I first used these speakers, I used the usb output and let the speakers process the sound digitally and thought the speakers were only average. 1st problem was the volume needed to be adjusted all the way up to hear sounds clearly and when I set the volume low, I could hear the subwoofer rumble all the time which was annoying. It was during this time I noticed there was an AUX input for the speakers I realized I could try to make the speakers sound much better. Eventually I bought the Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Champion sound card and what I did to make the speakers sound as good as my Klipsch Promedia v2.400 was to make some fine adjustments. First the subwoofer bass needed to be adjusted by the soundcard to 70% level in Gaming mode with Bass Boost set to 6dB gain. Once I played music through the speakers this time, I could feel the kick from the speakers even at low volumes - which could not be possible when playing with the speakers in USB mode. The quality of the speakers can be improved with better adjustments, but the software on the Logitech system was not created to get the best sound out of the speakers even with SRS mode turned on and Logitech bass maxed. It was only until I bought a X-Fi card that I could make the necessary adjustments to make the best of the 200 watts these speakers are rated for.

So my verdict: These are great speakers if you have a dedicated sound card with bass level adjustments, otherwise the Logitech software limits the speakers from reaching its full potential. In fact, they are equally powerful to the Klipsch promedia except lacking full 4 channel sound.

I have not done everything this system is capable of yet, and I probably never will. I do like having the choices, though. I bought a refurbished set for much less than a new set, and it's perfect. It looks great, the readout on the right speaker is really cool, and the sub packs a serious punch. Contrary to another reviewer, the volume on the remote is simply just turning the knob- that's it. Bass and treble settings are easy too- just push the center button to select them, then turn the knob. It doesn't need knobs on the speakers as it comes with a nice (and SIMPLE) remote. It gets as loud as you should ever need in a bedroom, but maybe not enough for a larger living room. It sounds awesome.
